Marble Vinyl Flooring in Singapore: The Look of Marble, and Its Honest Limits

Light grey marble-look vinyl tiles with fine bevelled joints in a Singapore living room

Marble vinyl flooring gives you the look of a marble floor without marble's upkeep: it never needs polishing, and lime juice or vinegar will not etch it. Ours is the LN Urban Stone Series, a 5mm vinyl laid in tile formats rather than planks, in matt and gloss finishes depending on the design, at S$4.00–S$4.40 psf supply and install. In most HDB flats it goes straight over the existing tiles. The honest limits come first, though. Even its gloss designs will not have the depth of mirror-polished stone, and it does not belong in a shower or anywhere that gets hosed down.

What is marble vinyl flooring, exactly?

It is a vinyl tile with a printed marble design under a clear 0.5mm wear layer, on a 100% waterproof click-lock body. Urban Stone comes in three formats: 610x305, 300x600 and 450x900mm. The same series includes cement- and terrazzo-effect designs, which is why you will also see it sold as stone-look vinyl.

What makes it read as tile is the format and the edge. Urban Stone comes in tile sizes with a small bevel on all four sides, so the joints fall in a tile grid that looks like grout lines, not in the long staggered runs of a plank floor. The series is also Singapore Green Label certified.

Why not just lay real marble?

Real marble is beautiful, and it asks a lot of you. It is porous, so it gets sealed and then resealed. It is calcium carbonate, so lime juice, vinegar and some cleaners etch dull marks into it. A polished marble floor also needs professional polishing from time to time to keep its shine, and it is cold and hard underfoot.

Marble-look vinyl takes all of that away. There is nothing to seal or polish, acids wipe off without etching, and the floor is warmer and quieter to walk on. What you give up is the stone itself: the cool touch on a hot afternoon, and veining that belongs to your floor alone.

Where does marble-look vinyl work, and where does it not?

It works where people want a stone look on a softer, warmer floor: living rooms, entryways, dry kitchens and the statement spaces where a wood plank would feel too ordinary. On our vinyl flooring page we call Urban Stone in its 450x900mm format the natural fit for kitchen floors, because a stone look reads as kitchen flooring and still cleans up like vinyl.

It does not work in a shower, on a bathroom floor that stays wet, in a wet kitchen that gets washed down, or anywhere with standing water around a floor trap. Every LN vinyl series is 100% waterproof, but in those rooms the risk is water getting underneath, and they need tile over a waterproofing membrane. Our waterproof flooring guide explains why.

The other place it does not work is a mood board full of mirror-polished marble. Urban Stone comes in matt and gloss finishes depending on the design, but even the gloss designs are vinyl, not polished stone. If a mirror polish is the whole point, a polished porcelain tile gets closer, and we would rather tell you now than after the floor is down.

Three ways to get the marble look

Pick a route. The same eight questions are answered for each, so you can flick between them.

How is it different from marble-look porcelain tile?

Marble-look porcelain is the other popular route, and we supply it too, from Hafary and Soon Bee Huat. It is a dense tile with the veining printed under a glaze, so it feels like stone: cooler and harder than vinyl. It does not etch, and it comes in a polished, glossy finish as well as matt. Our guide to homogeneous and porcelain tiles covers the category.

The difference is the work. Porcelain means hacking out the old tiles or laying a new tile layer over them, and hacking in an HDB flat needs a renovation permit. It is quoted per project, because the tile and the preparation underneath decide the price. Tiles are sold without a product warranty. Our 25-year material warranty covers our LVT vinyl range only. For the wider picture, see our vinyl versus tiles comparison.

Can it go over my existing tiles?

Usually, yes. For an overlay, the existing tiles must be firmly bonded, level within 3mm across any 1.8m span, and free of cracked or lifting pieces. The new floor sits about 5–7mm higher. HDB interior doors usually have 8–12mm of clearance, so our crew measures every door and trims any that would drag, on the day, at no extra charge. Skirting is reinstalled or replaced, and doorways between rooms get matching transition profiles.

A dry-area vinyl overlay needs no HDB renovation permit. Our overlay flooring guide for HDB flats walks through the checks in more detail.

What does marble vinyl flooring cost in Singapore?

Urban Stone is S$4.00–S$4.40 psf, supply and install, for standard HDB overlay scopes. Like every LN vinyl series it carries a 25-year material warranty, with a 1-year workmanship warranty on the installation. Real marble and marble-look porcelain are priced per project, since the stone or tile and the work underneath move the price a long way.

The quickest way to judge it is on your own floor. We bring Urban Stone samples to the free site visit, and the itemised written quote follows within 24 hours of the visit.

Common Questions

From standing height it reads as stone tile, because Urban Stone comes in tile sizes with a small bevel on all four edges, so the joints fall in a tile grid rather than the long staggered runs of a plank floor. Up close and barefoot you can tell the difference: it is warmer and softer than stone, and even the gloss designs are a vinyl surface, not polished stone. If a mirror shine is what you picture, polished porcelain tile gets closer.

Not on a shower floor or any bathroom floor that stays wet. Every LN vinyl series is 100% waterproof, but in a room that is washed down or has standing water around a floor trap, the risk is water getting underneath. Those rooms need tile laid over a waterproofing membrane. Marble-look vinyl belongs in dry rooms such as living rooms, bedrooms, entryways and dry kitchens.

For a dry kitchen, yes. We describe Urban Stone in its 450x900mm format as the natural fit for kitchen floors, because a stone look reads as kitchen flooring and the surface cleans up like any vinyl. Acids such as lime juice or vinegar will not etch it, so you simply wipe spills up as you go. A wet kitchen that gets washed down should keep its tiles.

No. Etching is a real marble problem: marble is calcium carbonate, and acids such as lime juice, vinegar and some cleaners react with it and leave dull marks. Vinyl does not react that way, so the same spill simply wipes up. For everyday cleaning, a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner are all a vinyl floor needs.

Our LN Urban Stone Series is S$4.00–S$4.40 psf, supply and install, for standard HDB overlay scopes. It carries a 25-year material warranty, plus a 1-year workmanship warranty on the installation, and door trimming is done on the day at no extra charge. Real marble and marble-look porcelain are priced per project instead. The site visit is free, and the itemised written quote follows within 24 hours.

Usually, yes, with no hacking. The tiles underneath must be firmly bonded, level within 3mm across any 1.8m span, and free of cracked or lifting pieces. The overlay raises the floor by about 5–7mm, so our crew measures every door and trims any that would drag, on the day. A dry-area vinyl overlay does not need an HDB renovation permit.

Yes, in some designs. Urban Stone comes in matt and gloss finishes depending on the design: most of the marble looks, such as Calacatta Marble, Pale Statuario and Nero Marble, are semi-gloss or high-gloss, while Frost Marble is matt. Matt or gloss, the finish comes with the tile, so it never needs polishing. If a mirror-polished marble floor is the goal, marble-look porcelain in a polished finish is the closer route, though it is slippery when wet and means hacking or a new tile layer. We supply both, so we can show you the two side by side at the site visit.
